Janet Acker, LCSW-R

Janet Acker is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with Psychotherapy privileges (LCSW-R). She earned a Master of Science in Social Work from Columbia University in 1989. She earned a Ph.D. in Social Welfare at University at Albany, School of Social Welfare in 2013. She is currently Associate Professor of Social Work at the College of Saint Rose.

Janet has 30 years of experience in clinical, supervisory, administrative and educational settings. She employs humanist, CBT, SFBT, mindfulness and motivational frameworks in her work with a primary focus on improvements in coping and quality of life. Janet focuses on the treatment of mental health concerns of individuals and couples, and has expertise in helping clients navigate life transitions such as career changes, adoption, parenting, grief and loss, divorce, and managing illness.

Janet’s current scholarship is focused on the critical examination of mental health models, the promotion of client self-determination and informed consent in mental health services.
